Tournaments

We Take Our Competition Seriously – Training Body and Mind Together – Skillfully

Since opening its doors (under the Glen Ridge Shukokai name) in 2006, Sensei Justin’s students have taken medals at every national tournament and at the 2012 World Tournament held in Atlantic City, NJ.

North American Tournaments are held typically twice a year – once in November/December and once in May/June – and are mandatory for green belts and higher (during years where there is a World Tournament being held, three North American tournaments will be held). Children ages seven and up are eligible to compete.

Tournaments offer students the opportunity to compete in kata (imaginary fight sequences performed solo) and kumite (sparring). Separate fees apply and are paid to the American Shukokai Karate Union (ASKU) organization. Tournaments are held in New Jersey.

World Tournaments are held once every two years (even years) in either Europe, Africa, or North America. Separate fees apply and are paid to the hosting country/dojo. Transportation to the venue and accommodation are paid individually. Team USA Training for the World Tournament begins in earnest at the start of the year, takes place every Saturday until the tournament, and is open to all participating dojos. Children ages 10 and up are eligible to participate. This event is only open to brown belts and above.
